In the thread, the organization claimed the new protocol features one-second blocks, sub-cent transaction costs, and Tether’s USDt (<a data-ct-non-breakable="null" href="/tether-price-index" rel="null" target="null" text="null" title="null">USDT</a>) and USDC (<a data-ct-non-breakable="null" href="/usdc-price-index" rel="null" target="null" text="null" title="null">USDC</a>) as gas.</p><p>Celo first <a data-ct-non-breakable="null" href="https://cointelegraph.com/news/celo-blockchain-proposes-return-to-ethereum-ecosystem-transition-to-l2" rel="null" target="null" text="null" title="null">proposed this transition</a> in the summer of 2023, and it is now completed after block production on the old layer-1 platform halted and continued on the new network. The new platform is based on the OP technology stack and an optimistic rollups implementation.</p><figure><img alt="Scalability, Celo, Layer2" src="https://s3.cointelegraph.com/uploads/2025-03/0195d2c9-17ed-7a8c-abba-1fbbd785ce4a" title=""><figcaption style="text-align: center;"><p><em>Source: </em><a data-ct-non-breakable="null" href="https://x.com/Celo/status/1904776407215202508" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" text="null" title="https://x.com/Celo/status/1904776407215202508"><em>Celo</em></a></p></figcaption></figure><p><em><strong>Related: </strong></em><a data-ct-non-breakable="null" href="https://cointelegraph.com/news/vitalik-buterin-celo-surpass-tron-stablecoin-address" rel="" target="_self" text="null" title="https://cointelegraph.com/news/vitalik-buterin-celo-surpass-tron-stablecoin-address"><em><strong>Vitalik Buterin endorses Celo for beating Tron in stablecoin addresses</strong></em></a></p><h2>Optimism-based architecture</h2><p><a data-ct-non-breakable="null" href="https://cointelegraph.com/explained/what-are-blockchain-rollups" rel="" target="_self" text="null" title="https://cointelegraph.com/explained/what-are-blockchain-rollups">Blockchain rollups</a> are layer-2 scaling solutions designed to bundle multiple transactions off the main blockchain, reducing congestion and lowering transaction fees. Optimistic rollups owe their name to their assumption that offchain transactions are valid by default, only resorting to fraud proofs during a challenge period if discrepancies are detected on the main chain.</p><p>Marek Olszewski, CEO of Celo developer cLabs, told Cointelegraph that “migrating to an Ethereum L2 enhances Celo’s security and scalability.” He added:</p><blockquote>“Celo transactions are now anchored to Ethereum, inheriting its battle-tested economic security and decentralization. Celo L2 also offers one-second block times and near-instant confirmations.“</blockquote><p><em><strong>Related: </strong></em><a data-ct-non-breakable="null" href="https://cointelegraph.com/learn/articles/a-beginners-guide-to-understanding-the-layers-of-blockchain-technology" rel="" target="_self" text="null" title="https://cointelegraph.com/learn/articles/a-beginners-guide-to-understanding-the-layers-of-blockchain-technology"><em><strong>A beginner’s guide to understanding the layers of blockchain technology</strong></em></a></p><h2>Leveraging Ethereum’s network effects</h2><p>Irfan Shaik, founder of rollup protocol Interstate, also recognized the change as positive for the protocol. He highlighted that Ethereum “has the greatest network effects of any chain,” adding:</p><blockquote>“Layer 1s with liquidity fragmentation can instead tap into the largest pool of liquidity available, the ETH layer 1s.“</blockquote><p>Olszewski also shared his enthusiasm over the transition to the OP tech stack, saying it allows for “deeper composability with Ethereum-native apps and protocols.” The new system is also significantly simplified, with 365,000 fewer lines of code — decreasing attack surface and, according to him, leading to a lighter, cleaner and faster codebase.</p><p>He also highlighted that the upgrade preserved Celo’s near five-year chain history and was carried out in a trustless manner. The token was also moved to the Ethereum blockchain, which Olszewski pointed out should sensibly increase its liquidity. He explained:</p><p>“What this means is that Celo becomes a fully-aligned Ethereum layer 2 — by architecture, by ecosystem and by mission.“</p><p><em><strong>Magazine: </strong></em><a data-ct-non-breakable="null" href="https://cointelegraph.com/magazine/dummies-guide-to-native-rollups-l2s-as-secure-as-ethereum-itself/" rel="" target="_self" text="null" title="https://cointelegraph.com/magazine/dummies-guide-to-native-rollups-l2s-as-secure-as-ethereum-itself/"><em><strong>What are native rollups? News Firms without business models ‘buy Bitcoin’ — Angel investor Jason Calaca

This might actually be great advice if [Strategy co-founder Michael Saylor] is gonna buy $1T in Bitcoin.”</blockquote><p>Still, Tomas Fanta, principal at crypto investment firm Heartcore, told Cointelegraph that there are tangible long-term benefits to <a data-ct-non-breakable="null" href="https://cointelegraph.com/explained/bitcoin-on-corporate-balance-sheets-whats-the-risk-and-reward" rel="null" target="null" text="null" title="null">holding Bitcoin on a corporate balance sheet</a>. Among those he listed were long-term price appreciation and theoretically lower correlation to equity markets over time.</p><p>“I do disagree with the view, though, that failing companies should be using Bitcoin as the last-ditch strategy,” Fanta said.</p><p><em><strong>Related: </strong></em><a data-ct-non-breakable="null" href="https://cointelegraph.com/news/gamestop-future-bitcoin-purchases-board-approval" rel="null" target="null" text="null" title="null"><em><strong>GameStop hints at future Bitcoin purchases following board approval</strong></em></a></p><figure><img alt="Firms without business models ‘buy Bitcoin’ — Angel investor Jason Calacanis" src="https://s3.cointelegraph.com/uploads/2025-03/0195d29d-9d7f-7560-a835-9b82b0fdb954" title=""><figcaption style="text-align: center;"><p><em>Source: </em><a data-ct-non-breakable="null" href="https://x.com/Jason/status/1904700167413989683" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" text="null" title="https://x.com/Jason/status/1904700167413989683"><em>Jason</em></a></p></figcaption></figure><h2>Is GameStop’s adoption part of a trend?</h2><p>Fanta said that while “one case is not enough to gauge a broader trend,” there does appear to be such a trend:</p><blockquote>“We may actually be witnessing one of the first experiments with corporate treasury diversification into crypto outside of tech or crypto-aligned companies such as Tesla or Coinbase.”</blockquote><p>Saul Rejwan, managing partner at crypto early-stage venture capital firm Masterkey, echoed the sentiment. According to him, companies are increasingly trying to secure themselves against long-term monetary shifts.</p><p>“Bitcoin’s role as a corporate reserve asset is no longer fringe; it’s becoming a legitimate play for companies that want to align themselves with a digitally-native, inflation-resistant financial future,” he said. “While not every company will follow suit, GameStop’s move joins a growing chorus,” Rejwan added.</p><p><em><strong>Related: </strong></em><a data-ct-non-breakable="null" href="https://cointelegraph.com/news/gamestop-bitcoin-buys-would-shake-tradfi-investors-swan-md" rel="null" target="null" text="null" title="null"><em><strong>GameStop buying Bitcoin would ‘bake the noodles’ of TradFi: Swan exec</strong></em></a></p><h2>Adopting Bitcoin is adapting to change</h2><p>Rejwan also noted that historically successful companies often falter when they resist change — citing Nokia as an example — and said adopting Bitcoin could be viewed as a strategic adaptation:</p><blockquote>“When done transparently and with proper risk management, Bitcoin can bring long-term resilience to corporate balance sheets — especially for brands with low time preference and strong alignment with digital-native values.”</blockquote><p>This idea was also repeated by Georgii Verbitskii, founder of crypto investment app TYMIO, who said that GameStop “could well become the example the market is waiting for.” He added:</p><blockquote>“Adding Bitcoin to a corporate balance sheet isn’t just speculative — it has real, long-term upside if executed properly.”</blockquote><p><em><strong>Magazine: </strong></em><a data-ct-non-breakable="null" href="https://cointelegraph.com/magazine/sec-crypto-laws-unclear/" rel="null" target="null" text="null" title="null"><em><strong>SEC’s U-turn on crypto leaves key questions unanswered</strong></em></a></p><template data-name="subscription_form" data-type="crypto_biz" label="Subscription Form: Crypto Biz Newsletter"></template></p>
